WEEK 13 - NEW YORK - thursday 22 july 2010

Sunday, August 1, 2010 | |

today we headed out to do a tour of madison square gardens. it is not a garden. this shows how little i know of america. haha. its an amazing event center hosting basketball, events and concerts.
while we wait for the tour to start, we grabbed a coffee in the borders, they have a chain called seattles best coffee. joseph ordered a vanilla caramel coffee, and received a black flavoured coffee. haha. so funny. it was actually nice coffee, a little weak, but nice enough, very smooth.

the tour was ok, they sat you down and watch a 5 minute video, let you take photos with a knicks? city dancer,

showed you a box office where you got to watch what was happening in the big main arena. [there was a dinosaur show on, with real mechanical dinosaurs, it was AWESOME! so realistic!]

then let you go into the arena, take a quick photo, then show you the hall with the cds on the wall.

then thats it. all for $18.50. i felt very let down, i mean it was amazing the size of the place, but if they are gonna show us a video, on a tv bigger than a 30” would be nice [this is america right?!], and actually have seats for you to sit on to watch it, not four couch seats and then the floor, with 4 staff walking infront of the tv while it played. couldnt they move the tv forward so they walked behind it? [it was on a trolley]. i dunno. maybe i thought it would be more exciting, and the tour guide would seem a little more happy to be there...

to console ourselves, we headed to charlies for a scrummy philly cheese steak sandwich, and gourmet fries, ssooooooo good! yum!

next we headed down to the circle line boat cruise, and spent two hours sailing around and taking lots of photos. the guy talking while the boat was sailing was really good, and informative.

on the way back up to time square, we stopped at a place called b&h photo. its the largest camera store in the usa, run by jews, and its so cool! we bought another external hard drive, so joseph and i have one each now. i resisted buying my new lense here, just because im nervous about carrying it across the states, even though id be saving $500! but i just want it to be new and crispy when i get home.
next we headed to the titantic exhibition, only to discover it closed back in february and our new york pass book was a bit out of date, but oh well.

we were about to head up the empire state building, but then a couch surfer called Nadav, who we had organised to meet up with at some point, gave us a call and organised to meet up and take us to a couch surfers meeting. hes really nice, and works as a doctor in the emergency department. he showed us the view from the top of his apartment building and then we headed over to the couch surfers meeting and met a few really nice people. we got to ride in a real new york taxi, craziest ride EVER!

I am going to keep an eye on your wonderful adventures while you are in the states. I think it is great to see this country through the fresh eyes of someone seeing it for the first time.
Smiles,
Molly
