WEEK 13 - NEW YORK - wednesday 21 july 2010

Sunday, August 1, 2010 | |

today we slept in, trying to get over our jetlag, considering it was technically 4am when we went to bed the night before!
oh my goodness, its so hot and muggy, and this is the busiest place i have ever seen! its an absolutely amazing city! there is everything you ever want, you just have to walk through the hundreds of streets to find them.
we decided to buy a 3 day new york pass each, which gets you free entry into a bunch of stuff, and itll work out cheaper, and it tells you where each attraction is, how long they are open for, prices etc, so its handy to have.

we decided to go to the central park zoo first, which is surprisingly small, the auckland zoo is way better, alot cleaner too. we got to see some penguins, which was cool, but i was feeling sorry for the polar bear and snow leopard, they just looked SO hot [its 31 degrees today]. but anyhow, we had a nice time looking around and enjoying the cool breeze from the trees [there arent many trees in NYC, but more than london!]

next we bought a weekly travel pass for the subway and buses for US$27 each, which will be handy, coz every time you catch a bus or train, its $2.25 no matter how far you go. they had tour buses doing loops around the attractions for $60 for 3 days, but the public transport is much cheaper, a bit confusing and not well sign posted like in london. but once you get the hang of it, its fine.
we subwayed over to time square, and met the naked cowboy, a man who earns his keep running around in underwear posing for photos with tourists. apparently hes got songs on youtube!

we went to the national geographic exhibition of King Tut, which was AMAZING! so beautifully presented, [very high security too!], right down to the great lighting, typography, each display case had the same explanation written multiple times in different places on the display case, so everyone has a chance to read, which was really great.
they dont allow photos in the exhibition, so i just got photos of the entrance way, but it was actually really nice just enjoying an exhibition, and not being distracted by lots of cameras flashing and people getting in the way taking photos when you are trying to enjoy looking at things.

next we decided to grab some dinner, its 6pm already! we found a cheap pizza place and got an 18” cheese pizza for $8! we had a homeless guy ask us for a piece, so we gave it to  him, and then this random girl looked like she had a sore foot, so i offered her a seat [the place was full] and then she starts rambling about how she cant find her husband, hes been missing since 10am, shes living in a hotel[?] and she thinks hes left her, and how they both lost their jobs, blah blah blah, it was kinda sad, but then im not sure if it was real, or just a ruse to score some free food? we offered her some, but she didnt want to take charity, and walked away, then came back 5mins later asking if the offer still stood! of course it did, and we were stuffed full from just half of the pizza, so we left her with the other half of the pizza and gapped it quickly before any other people wanted to eat our dinner! although it was nice to help someone, even if youre not quite sure about them!

the final stop for the evening is madame tussauds, its really cool, highly recommend a visit here! we saw loads of famous people, so i can say i saw leonardo dicaprio in new york, no need to mention hes a bit waxy.... oh and robert pattinson! eeeee!

and then finally home to bed, new york 1, us 0, sooooo tired!
