WEEK 11 - NETHERLANDS - thursday 8 and friday 9 july 2010

Monday, July 26, 2010 | |

thursday today, and we are sleeping in! so nice! poor Marina had to go to work, so i know she’ll be shattered tonight. we spent the day cleaning up after the party, doing washing and watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Henk and Marina surprised us by taking us out to dinner to a steak house, oh my gosh, sooooooooo gooood! YUM! i had french onion soup with cheese for starters and joseph had cheesey mushrooms, and we both had huge burgers for mains. yum! headed home for coffees and chats, watched tv, and just blobbed, i went to bed early and left joseph catching up with his cousin till late.

friday today, and we are off to the open air museum! hooray! its called ‘the land of water’ or zuiderzee museum. you take a ferry across to the other side and its a little village full of old style houses, with little shops and stuff, it was so cool! actually it was really hot! 32 degrees-ish today, so we were melting a wee bit!
the brochure says this about the history of the area “in 1932 the Afsluitdik [barrier dam] closed off the Zuider Zee and the new inland sea acquired the name Ijsselmeer. The vivid culture of the former Zuider Zee area survives in the varied collection of objects and premises of the Zuiderzee Museum. in addition, the museum displays present-day expressions of art and culture that capitalize on the rich traditions from the area.” www.zzm.nl or www.zuiderzeemuseum.nl

henk and marina then took us to afsluit dyke to see the giant lake seperated from the sea, it was pretty cool, cant believe you can actually claim back land from the sea and live on it! cool!

next stop was a little town called Lemmer where we had tapas for dinner, soooooooo good! it was really hot, so we were downing the drinks, and enjoyed watching the boats go past on the canal, its a peaceful wee town, really really nice place to stop for a feed :)

then off home, finally got around to taking a photo of the sunset from the balcony of henk and marinas place, its so pretty!
